Fandom Brainstorming for 2008!
This post is not for suggesting fandoms or cleaning up fandom/character listings! Comments made to this post will not be emailed to me, so please use this yuletide_admin post for any questions, or email yuletide@yuletidetreasure.org.

This post is a place where Yuletide participants can brainstorm and work out which six fandoms they want to nominate when the Nominations form goes live! This is purely informal, and I won't be using any information from comments made to this post -- to actually submit fandoms, you will use the Nomination form, which won't be live for a while yet.

Please feel free to comment at will, talk amongst yourselves, and/or link to posts elsewhere about your own wibbling and internal negotiations and processes of elimination! If you aren't planning to sign up for Yuletide this year, you're still welcome to comment on this post to help generate excitement and ideas.

To help give you ideas, here are links to the Ginormous List of Fandoms (tm) from 2005, the list of 2007 Nominated Fandoms, and the outdated Master Fandom List of fandoms/characters for 2006.

The Ginormous List and the Master Fandom List are merely for brainstorming purposes; not all fandoms on them are still eligible for Yuletide, and character listings may have expanded. And remember that TV shows at least ten years old which are currently inactive are eligible.

All official administrative posts will be posted in the yuletide_admin LJ. Please make sure you are watching or have the Admin LJ friended to keep up with Yuletide 2008!

I'm wondering if Batman/Gordon from The Dark Knight qualifies. There's a quite mindbogglingly large community called darkknightfic that is overwhelmingly Batman/Joker, though any pairing is allowed, and a small community dedicated to Batman/Gordon over at nowweretwo.
Meltha: DL carryingbookishwench on September 26th, 2008 06:31 pm (UTC)
I believe, although I may be wrong about this, that any fandom that has come into being in the last year qualifies for Yuletide. Batman's been around forever, but The Dark Knight hasn't, so it probably qualifies.

I just want to put My Beautiful Laundrette out there and gather some support for it. It's unbelievable there is no fanfic for this gorgeous movie.

Guarding Tess, 84 Charing Cross Road
Is anyone willing to join in with me in asking for these two? Pretty please?

Also hoped-for, possibly not-going-to-get: Jericho, Miss Guided, Dirty Sexy Money.

Psychonauts, Tomb Raider, Fable, SSX, Red Eye, WTD, SNL
A few ideas:

Psychonauts [video game]: This fandom has a devoted following on FanFiction.Net as well as whisperingrock, and it's definitely obscure. There's a very fun roster of characters with tons of plot possibilities!
ff.net, whisperingrock, psychofiction

Tomb Raider [video game]: There's a listing for the Tomb Raider films, but none for the games! Delve into Lara's history, write some Amanda/Lara femmeslash - better yet, Natla/Amanda/Lara! Go crazy!
ff.net, tombraiders

Fable [video game]: Very rare and with tons of room for those who like writing original heroes and heroines, but also with an interesting cast of canon characters such as Theresa and Jack of Blades!
ff.net

SSX [video game]: From the first SSX to SSX Tricky and SSX3, there's an awesome roster of characters in a location that whispers of many unwritten plots and many wintry hijinx!
ff.net

Red Eye [movie]: It has more of a fandom than you might think! Was strongest in the past year, but it's still going!
ff.net, jumping_the_eye

Watching the Detectives [movie]: Try and imagine all the wacky, hilarious, therapy-inducing adventures Neil and Violet go on! All the near break-ups and accidental heists!
gumshoe_video

Saturday Night Live [rpf]: Come on! SNL throws itself to the RPF lions every Saturday! Who watched the Palin/Clinton sketch and couldn't help but think Tina and Amy ought to be united on more fronts? Or even just a quirky fic about life working on Weekend Update!

I've been working on my list all year! Here are mine:

Donald Strachey Mysteries - still a favorite of mine
Lynn Flywellan's Nightrunner series - one of my newest loves & I want more!
A Dog's Breakfast - loved my gift story last year and hope for more
Planet of the Apes (TV Series) - a show I just rediscovered
In & Out - every year I hope to see stories and I'm disappointed
Jesus Christ Superstar - another hold-over from last year and my angst favorite

I would have added Torchwood, which is my shiniest new fandom, but I expect it's too big now to qualify? Maybe?
Ellen Fremedonellen_fremedon on September 26th, 2008 06:47 pm (UTC)
Torchwood is huge. I can't imagine it's still Yuletide-eligible.

I've had a list of six fandoms for months now, although I suspect it'll change a few more times before the very end.

However!

The most important piece of advice I can give to anybody is that if you want a fandom to be available when it comes time to sign up for real, you must nominate it yourself. I cannot stress enough how important this is. Last year, I didn't nominate my favorite fandom because, you know, it was already nominated. In fact, it was still on the list the day before nominations closed.

But then? That fandom - the one I actually was most hoping to get a story for and one that definitely qualified - wasn't on the sign-up list. And why? Presumably because the person who'd nominated it in the first place changed her/his mind at the last minute.

Don't let this earth-shatteringly traumatic thing happen to you! (*g*)

Good advice. It'll be a funny day when a popular rare fandom (um...) gets offed from the list because everyone thinks that everyone else put it on...

Moorcock?
Trying to figure out: does all of Michael Moorcock's Multiverse count as a single fandom, or does it make more sense to break it down? Because all of these:

- Elric
- The Dancers at the End of Time
- Jerry Cornelius
- Books of the Second Ether
- Nomad of the Time Streams
- all the other Eternal Champion books
- The Metatemporal Detective
- the Multiverse graphic novel

overlap at some point or another. And yet each is fairly distinct in its aesthetic, themes, style, etc. I'm inclined to propose Elric, Dancers, and JC as their own separate fandoms, and find some way to lump the rest together.

And I also very much want to propose Iain M. Banks's Culture books.

ETA: Okay, Corum and Hawkmoon too. I neglected to mention them because, er, well ... frankly, I don't much care for 'em. >_>

Ellen Fremedon: santa hatellen_fremedon on September 26th, 2008 06:46 pm (UTC)
Fandoms ahoy!

I think I am requesting A Companion to Wolves, which is brand new; Kim Stanley Robinson- Mars trilogy, which has been nominated before but not written for, and Rosemary Kirstein- Steerswoman series, which has been written once or twice.

The other fandoms I'd really like a chance to write in and definitely want to see nominated:

Shadow Unit
Middleman
Mad Men
Red Green
Temeraire
Sherlock Holmes
Bloom County

Vote-swapping, anyone? I know I'm not the only one who wants some of these!

Beth H: Booksbooksbooks (bethbethbeth)bethbethbeth on September 26th, 2008 06:50 pm (UTC)

I fell badly for the film Imagine You and Me a couple of months ago, and was thrilled to just discover that it was a requested and offered fandom last year! I'm definitely nominating it this year, and hope others will too. It needs more love (and fanfic). :)

Others I'd love to both read and write in include:

Temeraire
His Dark Materials (I just wrote my Masters thesis on it; I know the books backwards by now)
Traditional Fairy Tales
Gossip Girl (I know, I know, but it's a guilty pleasure. That, and the femmeslash would be amazing)
Pan's Labyrinth
Neil Gaiman - American Gods
Sandman (comics)

Im also thinking about Lost in Austen (god, TV has rotted my brain this year, lol), and I would also Love, love love it if The Dark Knight scraped through, but I'm not sure how much fic there already is out there...

You wrote a thesis on HDM? Wow. Is it anywhere up to read? Because now you've got me intrigued.

Sandman (comics) *has* to be on there. I enjoy reading the Yuletide fic for that way too much.

I've been scared to touch fairy tales, but I think I might give it a look this year since I've loved them - from all sorts of cultures and countries - all my life. (I've even written fic based on fairy tales in my primary fandom. Taking on East of the Sun West of the Moon was no picnic!)
